He believed other parts should be published as Job for a Boy but under a pseudonym. Central to that book, Manuel claimed, was the “candid advice a boy needs about his taking charge of himself and making himself over between the ages of 12 and 25. . . . Transforming himself from a boy, with a boy’s limitations, to a man, with a man’s tremendous possibilities.” Regardless of how he described Job for a Boy, Manuel could not disguise its strong hints of pedophilia. It began and ended with Manuel’s veneration of the “ancient Greeks” who “spent all the time they could spare teaching boys and watching their progress.
